Upper Eyelid Blepharoplasty
Upper eyelid surgery is required when there is excess skin or fullness in the upper eyelid area. Excessive droopy skin or prominent areas of fullness are common concerns of patients and can cause numerous problems such as making the eyes look tired, block the ability to see, or significantly detract from the eyes overall aesthetic beauty.
Before upper eyelid surgery is performed a comprehensive evaluation of your eyelids and eyebrows must be performed. The upper eyelids and eyebrows must be considered together, because excessive upper eyelid skin often goes hand in hand with a lower than normal eyebrow position. Evaluating the position of the eyebrows is important because elevating the eyebrows to their normal position will often eliminate the need or decrease the amount of upper eyelid skin requiring removal.
Upper Eyelid Surgery in Detail
Surgery to the upper eyelids can be performed alone or combined with other procedures that rejuvenate the eyelid area. The upper eyelid procedure involves an incision within the natural crease of the upper eyelid, making it unrecognizable after surgery. After the incision, a laser is used to perform the removal of excess skin and excess fat if indicated. The incision is closed with sutures that are removed a few days after surgery. The procedure is very well tolerated with minimal swelling and bruising. Patients are commonly out in public a few days after the procedure. Read more about blepharoplasty.
Lower Eyelid Blepharoplasty
The lower eyelid area is one of the more common areas that patients seek to rejuvenate. Typical concerns may be “bags” or puffiness, hollowness, wrinkles, or simply excess skin in the area. These aging or hereditary related problems are especially troublesome because they can give the outward impression to others that you are tired or sad, even though you may be quite rested and happy. They can also make you look older than your true age.
Often the best way to alleviate these features is through lower eyelid rejuvenation surgery. Lower eyelid surgery is called blepharoplasty (blef-A-row-plas-tea), and is a procedure that has evolved substantially over the last 5 years. Older techniques were based on the removal of skin, muscle and fat. Unfortunately, these techniques commonly altered the shape of the eyes, loosened the lower eyelids, or created a hollowed appearance. Over time, the eyes would lose their "almond" shape and natural appearance and become more round, smaller, or more simply stated: "like you had something done."
How exactly did this happen? Since eyelid "bags" are typically protruding fatty tissue, the hollowness was created by the indiscriminate over removal of fat. The altered eye shapes and loose lower eyelids were caused by cutting through the muscle layer to get to the fatty tissue, a common feature with older techniques.
The newer techniques used by Dr. Gangnes and Dr. Miller seek to sculpt and re-position the protruding fatty tissue thereby avoiding the subsequent hollowness seen with older techniques. The techniques provide a natural, more youthful beautiful appearance. Additionally, the muscle layer is always preserved thereby avoiding common problems and adverse results seen with older techniques.
Lower blepharoplasty is a common procedure at Facial Aesthetic Concepts. The procedure can be performed comfortably with local anesthesia and mild sedation. The incisions are hidden on the inside of the eyelid, and our techinques avoid prolonged swelling and brusing, with most patients returning to normal activities in days not weeks. Lower blepharoplasty can be combined with other procedures and modified to meet your aesthetic goals. Read more about blepharoplasty.

Pinch Technique
The lower eyelid pinch technique is one of the latest, less invasive procedures that produce dramatic results with very little, or no recovery time required.
The procedure is designed to remove excess skin beneath the eyes resulting in a smoother lower eyelid area. The lower eyelid pinch technique is primarily recommended for patients with only a mild to moderate amount of excess skin beneath the eye. The procedure involves the placement of a unique medication to the lower eyelid area, which allows the surgeon to “pinch” and then remove a precise amount of excess skin. The skin is removed at the eyelash line, resulting in an invisible scar, and a smoother lower eyelid contour. The procedure has minimal to no downtime and can be performed under local anesthesia without the need for any sedation or general anesthesia.
The lower eyelid pinch technique can be combined with other procedures such as fat augmentation, laser skin resurfacing, and other facial rejuvenation procedures. To see if you are a candidiate for the lower eyelid pinch technique, Drs. Gangnes and Dr. Miller are offering complimentary consultations in all our South Orange County locations.
